Black History Month recognition
Nonso Morah
Spruce Grove's Nonso Morah is one of 20 nationwide recipients of the 2023 RBC Future Launch Scholarship for Black Youth. The scholarship awards up to $10,000 per year (for a maximum of four years) to Black students across Canada
This month, the second-year University of Ottawa student from Spruce Grove was named one of 20 nationwide recipients of the 2023 RBC Future Launch Scholarship for Black Youth. The scholarship awards up to $10,000 per year (for a maximum of four years) to Black students across Canada.
First awarded in 2022, the scholarship recognizes both strong academic performance and community involvement. It is designed to help reduce the financial barriers to post-secondary education and training for Canadian Black youth. In addition to financial support, the scholarship also provides successful candidates with various services including mentorship, academic and career planning, tutoring, internship opportunities, and networking.
After moving to Spruce Grove with her family at the age of five, Morah attended École Broxton Park School from Kindergarten to Grade 9 and then Spruce Grove Composite High School (SGCHS) from Grades 10-12. She studied French as a second language throughout her K-12 education.
“I want to give a shoutout to both SGCHS and Broxton Park because they ultimately shaped who I have become. I also want to harp on the importance of having a French education. Now that I live beyond Alberta, I see the value of the language not only in Canada but in other countries. It’s a very universal language that connects you to a lot of other people and perspectives,” said Morah.
While it was her plan to attend the University of Alberta after graduating from SGCHS, her acceptance into the Senate Page Program in 2021 led her instead to Ottawa. She was one of only nine students across Canada to be selected for the program.
Beyond her undergraduate degree, Morah is currently weighing three graduate studies including international relations and diplomacy, journalism, and law.
