Music is for Everyone!

Please note: All music activities are tentatively planned and are subject to change as needed.

Our program provides many opportunities for students to attain the musical skills and understanding needed to make music an enjoyable and meaningful part of their lives.

Our music program includes:

  • Elementary Music
  • Junior & Senior Choirs
  • Band
  • Hand Bell Ensemble

Other music ensembles may be added throughout the school year.

Elementary Music

The elementary music program is part of our regular school day and is focused on:

  • Building musical awareness through listening, moving, singing and playing Orff and non-pitched percussion instruments, as well as ukulele and guitar.
  • Developing the ability to sing in tune
  • Reading and writing music notation
  • Self-expression and responding to music through creative movement and dance
  • Nurturing positive attitudes toward music.

Students are taught with an emphasis on Orff and Kodaly music philosophies.

Extracurricular Programs

Choir

Our program provides many opportunities for students to attain the musical skills and understanding needed to make music an enjoyable and meaningful part of their lives.

  • Senior Choir (Grades 4-6) - $10 fee

Senior Choir rehearses at lunch recess twice a week. Junior Choir practices during music class. Both choirs have performance opportunities outside of school.

Concert Band Program

Band students learn to play woodwind, brass or percussion instruments in a group setting. Students in Grades 7-9, or with previous experience, are welcome to join Concert Band.

Handbell Ensembles

Playing handbells allows students to enhance their musical experience and learn new techniques by playing a wide variety of music.

  • Senior Handbells (Grades 5-9; Full Year), an auditioned ensemble - $10 fee

Handbell History

In 1989, École Queen Street School received a generous gift of two octaves of handbells from the Wilson family in memory of their daughter. Stephanie Ann Wilson was in Grade 6 French Immersion when she passed away due to a brain aneurysm just before the end of the school year. The school later purchased a third octave of bells, and in 2014, three octaves of hand chimes were added.

These handbells are now part of the music program at École Broxton Park School as Mr. Wilson, Stephanie’s dad, requested that the handbells always stay in Spruce Grove with the French Immersion program.
