Jan Gillett: Spruce Grove City Councilor Bio

Jan is a first term city councilor who is so passionate about serving her community that she ran for office three times until she was finally successful! She is proud to be the first Black person elected to our city council. Alongside the Mayor and other members of city council, she sets the overall direction, and provides guidelines as to how the City of Spruce Grove will run.

She is a descendant of the Wellington County Ontario pioneers, one of the largest Black settlements where African Americans and her ancestors traveled the route of the underground railway to freedom.

She has made Spruce Grove her home for 27 years, has 3 grown daughters and 4 grandchildren. Her aspirations for Spruce Grove are that we learn from the past, lead change and move forward to become a city that enjoys a strong sense of community, wellbeing and prosperity for all residents.
